The
Glass House Series, is an exploration of the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Barcelona Pavilion: specifically, his use of materials, geometry,
sculpture and reflection to create multiple interpretations of space.
By emphasizing individual elements within the Pavilion the intent is to
make the viewer aware of how through the use of reflection; Mies
expanded how one interacts physically and psychologically within the
space. |

A home is not defined by its structure but by the people that fill it as the saying goes. If a house costs a million dollars who inhabits the space and what kind of dwelling can be had for a million dollars in Michigan, California or Vermont? Culling from the New York Sunday Times article ‘What You Can Get for A Million Dollars In…’ the series Million$ House reduces these homes to pure graphic space emphasizing the empty void a home is reduced too when looked at as pure commodity separate from human experience. |

For a number of years I have been exploring the theme of home and place. This led me to examine items present in my own space. I decided to begin photographing my sons Kaleidoscope dollhouse, a modernist version of the traditional childrens toy. It is intriguing observing your child create story lines inside his ‘house’ within the personal confines of his room. This led me to question how we interpret home, what is inside a dwelling apart from outside pretext and preconceived notions; not just what is physically, but psychologically in a home. I started taking Polaroids of the toy house creating scenarios that I thought of as film stills. My intention is to construct the moments of inner reflection, which are heavy with the multiple moods contained in a household. These thoughts often being relinquished to an inner silence offset by a seemingly benign daily routine. |
