Initially Catherine ‘s work was inspired by the rugged cornish landscape and the surrounding seas. The rough granite rocks covered in lichen, the wind swept cliff tops, sandy beaches and transparent sea all play an important part in her work.
In more recent years the English countryside, particularly woodlands has become an interesting development, the natural abstract elements of trees and branches and the fading effect of near and far.
Composition is also important to Catherine ‘s work , she is always looking for interesting compositions and will take lots of photos so she can select the most visually pleasing.
The final inspiration to create the work is the techniques she uses. Etching and Carborundum printing are the most commonly used mediums, and it’s the textural qualities that are unique to these practices that stimulates Catherine to use them. The resulting prints really create a sense of place.
