In 2006 she graduated with a BA First Class Honours at Griffith University, after having completed a Bachelor of Creative Arts degree at the same institution. She works as a Gallery Assistant at George Petelin Gallery, and is co-founder and project director of 'tinygold,' an artist-run initiative on the Gold Coast. | 关于此艺术家 |
Mariam Arcilla creates artworks that respond to contemporary folklore and behaviours, in particular to society's obsession with the perfect medicine, the perfect date, the perfect food, the perfect lover. Mariam’s practice oscillates between illustration, animation, video installation, and mixed media works. She is also interested in curating and review writing, and in 2008 will be involved in several curations held in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Mariam's goal is to one day operate an artist-run gallery on the Gold Coast aimed at promoting fellow emerging artists. |

The Gambit's Gaze
2006 |
|
The Gambit’s Gaze signifies a binary dynamic where power and resistance is directed and received at the same time. In this 2-channel video a patient is exhibiting subtle physical behaviour to ndicate her symptoms, while the doctor begins to form a hypothesis through
observation. The struggle for authority, and of patient empowerment, occurs when the patient decides to ‘show the doctor where it hurts’ by using the doctor’s own extension-of-the-body, the stethoscope, to place on her chest. The term ‘gambit’ means to gain an advantage through a manoeuvre or redirection. In this setting, this ‘new gaze’ between doctor and patient seems to be a shared misguide. I tried to explore the bodily dynamics of this partnership. For example, in ‘The
Gambit’s Gaze’ the doctor’s incessant tapping as a subtle over-ride to the patient’s heart beats, is a response to many things: the doctor, who may have already made her mind up about the patient, will still allow for the patient to make herself feel validated. The taps are also a response towards the practical unreliability of the stethoscope. The stethoscope routine is timed at 3:00, which indicates the briefness
of consultation and the degree to which the doctor becomes distracted.
While the doctor is busy doing the disease-talk, the patient is wanting her to listen to the illness
version – another reason, for the patient preferring to show exactly where it hurts, to take over with an illness language, instead of relying on the doctor’s hurried
hypothesis. The stethoscope that spans both images, as discussed in the previous chapter, re-iterates the new operations of modern doctor-patient relationships, which indicates the departure between a doctor’s intimidating stature as ‘healer’ and the patient’s role as one who ‘heeds to the doctor’s advice’. |
