Introducing Modern Backlit Artwork by up-and-coming Toronto artist, Carlton Squires.
In most cases images are a combination of digital and acrylic artwork.
• In a well lit space, these pieces look much like other stylish visual art you might hang in a living room or den.
• However, in response to human presence in a dark room, these pictures reveal their gorgeous ‘dark side’, becoming stunningly illuminated from within.
• Image backlighting occurs subtly, with light intensity increasing slowly to a maximum once motion is detected, and fading gently to darkness when motion has ceased.
• Up to eight lighting ‘scenes’ are included in each piece, each being chosen for display randomly by the battery-powered, on-board electronics.
• The backlit colour softly cascades from the image, helping to create a rich, appealing mood in the darkened room.
“Stylish artwork by day; interactive, illuminated masterpieces by night”
My backlit artwork is my attempt to make artistic pieces more interesting, interactive, and less static. While there will always be a place for pure pigment-on-canvas artwork, I believe the ability to derive pleasure from artistic pieces at times other than when a room is well lit, significantly increases their value and 'coolness'.
My goal with each piece is to, not only add character to the environment when the space is well lit, but also when it’s not. Each piece is intended to add a particular ambience to the space by emphasizing a specific colour or complement of colours. For example, a deep crimson or gold backlit image can add dramatically to the warmth in a room, and can complement strongly other elements in the space, like a fireplace or modern entertainment system.

I am a Toronto-based artist.
Largely self-taught, I guess you could say I’ve been blessed with artistic talent from an early age. I’ve always loved doodling with pencil, but I’ve also dabbled in sculpture and mixed media art. I’ve also received artistic instruction and advice from my father, Leceister Squires, an accomplished painter and experienced art teacher.
Recent areas of interest include oil on canvas, airbrushing and digital artwork. |
