| Kevin Caron |

|
Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on February 2, 1960, Kevin Caron didn't stay there long. His family actually lived in nearby Stratford, but they moved to Florida when he was still a boy, and then to Arizona, where he lives today.

| 关于此艺术家 |
Kevin Caron has always built things. (He thought everyone did.) The focus was utility - strength and durability were paramount. That was, until, he built Undulations. He could have simply stretched the material, bolted it down and been done with it. But in the metal fabric, he saw its suppleness, and he never questioned its need to be seen.
Next was Stretch, who arrived name first. Kevin began to think beyond the perfunctory, and balance it with whatever was in the materials, waiting to be seen or, in the case of his fountains and bells, heard.
Rather than developing over time, most of Kevin's pieces come whole from his intuition. They evolve from there, but are born of a piece.
What sets Kevin's work apart and has earned his conceptual work such responses as "fresh," "lively" and honest" is his lack of preconceptions, his remarkable imagination and his unshakable commitment to practicality, which is rooted in his ability to build things to last. Now, however, they are as likely to be beautiful and inspiring as sturdy. |

So Close
2003 147 x 25 x 127 |
|
So Close, part of Caron's Staircase Series, rises out of the ground and into the world. |
Aspire
2004 259 x 53 x 53 |
|
Twisting its way into the sky, Aspire bares its many facets. A spiral staircase that diminishes into nothingness, its steps becoming steeper as it climbs (not unlike life, for some), Aspire silently speaks of the challenges in graceful planes.
spire is currently on exhibit at Pima Community College East Campus, along with another in the Staircase Series, DNA. |
Conquest
2004 122 x 36 x 36 |
|
The rock is almost startlingly green, its light and darker striations set off by hairline-thin black layers, and occasionally interrupted by a sudden shift of order.
It begins to make sense when you know it came from an ancient lake bed near the small U.S. town of Wikieup, Arizona, which is halfway between Wickenburg and Kingman. The shifts, we are told, are evidence of long ago earthquakes.
It would take an earthquake to move this stalwart now. Proud and tall, the rock stands defiant, conquered only by the copper vines that ascend its steep faces, which are on two sides sheer and green-striped, and on the other two coated and pocked by calcium like the surface of a moon.
The water pours from the triumphant vines, their copper leaves glinting in the sun, then spills down three faces of the green giant, quietly burbling about its feat. |
Zounds
2005 185 x 79 x 89 |
|
Zoot alor! You have three strikes with this magnificent bell, but you are nearly never out of sound - Kevin has timed it at holding its tone for two minutes. It even rivals a nearby church for clarity and resounding statement.
Zounds' simple yet elegant lines echo the strength of its tone, repeating its shapes in pleasing and sometimes surprising ways. A profile of the piece - a decided Z - explains some of the inspiration for its name. |
Floating Undulations
2006 155 x 503 x 142 |
|
The lovely "fabric" of this large steel privacy screen ripples as if being blown in the wind. Raised aloft as if floating, it makes you wonder what sort of wind could so effortlessly lift something so massive.
Part of a private sculpture garden, Floating Undulations hides pool equipment, while providing easy access around both sides and through a hidden gate. |
