As an artist, I am compelled to create art that challenges my skill and interprets the world with deep emotion. I love the use of drawing and colour to create new ways of viewing the objects of our everyday experience, as I strive to capture the spirit that animates the everyday.
My landscapes and figures in oil and watercolour have resulted from my efforts to meet that challenge. I love the rich smooth quality of oil paint, and the way I can carefully blend colours and create textures on the canvas. I also love using watercolour for fresh spontaneous interpretations of a scene, and how freely the colours flow across the paper.
I studied art at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta from 1989-1993, and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. While working towards my degree, I studied painting, printmaking, photography, drawing and graphic design. I also refined my technique while taking art classes for several years at a private school (1989-1991).
I exhibited paintings and photographs at the University of Alberta grad show in 1993, and at Artistically Speaking Art Gallery in 1990 and 1991. I also exhibited and sold watercolor paintings at Anosa art gallery in 1995.

Artistically, I am most influenced by the art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the impressionist, post-impressionist, symbolist and expressionist painting movements. My painting style lies somewhere between impressionism and expressionism, which gives me a range of ideas to work with when searching for a mode of expression. I graduated several years ago from the U of A with a B.F.A. degree. After some years of pursuing other career paths, I have recently become determined to work more diligently at my art. My goals are to work on my art career, acquire some experience in exhibiting, and to actively further my development as an artist.

Two Horses
1992 60.96x91.44 |
|
"Two Horses", is an example of an oil painting in an expressionist style. I was not aiming to paint the horses realistically, but I wanted to use bright colour and looser brushstrokes to emphasize the feeling and the spirit of the horses. |
Three Horses
1992 152.4x213.36 |
|
This painting, titled "Three Horses", is the largest oil painting I ever did, part of my 'Wild Horses" series. The size turned out to be 5 feet by 7 feet, and I painted it in an expressionist style, for my vision of the power and beauty of a horse's physicality and movement.
I worked on this painting for several weeks, to capture the feeling of being overwhelmed by the presence of untamed spirit. |
Red Green Horses
1993 121.92x121.92 |
|
I used a photo reference just to get the pose of the horses, and improvised the colours to portray the spirit and movement.
I thought this piece was successful in achieving the mood I was after, of horses in motion and of heightened emotion because of the unrealistic colours. |
Dark Horses
1993 121.92x121.92 |
|
This painting was completed in oil on hardboard, and it is a large piece from my horse series (4ft.x4ft.). I was experimenting with darks and lights, and levels of contrast between the two, to produce a mysterious mood. I was also trying different thicknesses of paint, from very thin layers in the background to thicker paint layers in the highlights on the horses' bodies. I also restricted the colours I was using, to create a monochrome effect, so that attention would be focused more on the forms in the horse bodies. |
