The approach I take to painting is to access the subconscious through the creative process. I believe that in the creation of art, or an image, one gains understanding of themselves by realizing that part of us which is otherwise inaccessible. For me, I feel that painting gives me the most expressive medium for exercising the creative process.
My recent abstract work can be described as a form of Cloissonnism- "a style of painting with bold single color forms separated by dark heavy contours. The name evokes the technique of cloisonné, where wires (cloisons or "compartments") are soldered to the body of the piece, filled with powdered glass, and then fired". Paul Gauguin was an artist who worked in this style. I have adapted this form of painting from my previous figurative works to create a purely abstracted style of cloissonnism. These works often begin as a continuous bold single line drawing, moving along in an indeterminable, overlapping sequence creating non-representational shapes. Once established, I use an application of paint utilizing primarily flat colors that convey strong emotional and symbolic energy, yet also forces the viewer to confront the paint itself. In this way the paint and the color becomes just as important as the line. I see this combination of line, shape,
form, and color as a "community". Extrapolating this concept of community- The painting becomes a map outlining and detailing the connection between all it’s disparate parts without which it would fall apart or unravel. I tend to view these unions as a microcosm that informs the interconnectivity of human relationships.
Regardless of the meaning that I discover for my own work, it is my hope that the viewer will make his or her own interpretation of what they see. The one truth to art is that it is completely subjective to the individual.
