Ben Van Dyke

About the Artist

I started out as a painter, found graphic design and managed to find a home in installation art in 2/3D mazes of typography and cryptic autobiography.

Univ of Michigan Lecture Series Poster

2006
45 x 24

Lecture series poster created for the University of Michigan. I created a small sculpture of typography to be photographed and used as imagery to represent the University's lecturers.

Typography Sculpture

2005
Vinyl, oil paint, felt, found objects
25x12

Detail of typography installation using the letters S, R, P, M and the number 7 to create the word: BLAND from the shadows.

When Red Looks Like Orange

2004
found objects, glue, oil paint, ink
5x5

Created this small collage using found objects from the streets of Beijing...including Chinese currency, bus tickets and postage stamps.

Lady in a Red Dress

2008
Vinyl, wood, glue, wire, acrylic, glue
25 x 30 x10

Detail of typographic installation using a tiny plastic woman in a red dress. With the shadows from the wire (protruding from the wall) create the word: FLYING

Identity

2008
Vinyl, plastic
150 x 80

(Installation detail) Typography installation spelling out the phrase: "We repeat so we can be understood and the repetition becomes our identity".

Engels

2005
found objects, glue on cardboard
8 x 8

Typographic experiment with found objects...

Fail and Repeat

2008
Vinyl, acrylic, found objects, glue
300 x 45cm

Typographic installation of found objects and dark materials to create a cryptic message about failure and perserverance. All of the materials used are letterforms.

Anti-Knowledge

2008
Ceramic Letters
120 x 80cm

Using a box full of letters, I spelled out the phrase: ANTI KNOWLEDGE and piled up the letters in a pattern that would encrypt the message.

Fool

2008
Vinyl, acrylic, found objects, glue
150 x 45cm

(Detail) Typographic installation communicating the difference being hopelessly lost and romantically in love with uncertainty.

Benevolent Flux

2006
Digital Media
30 x 20cm

Cover design for my master's thesis and current book project titled: Benevolent Flux; living in harmony with chaos.

Lecture Series Poster

2004
Digital Media and the use of a typewriter and photography

Mail Art

2004
Postage stamps, glue, ink

Using materials found on American postage stamps, I created a block of wood with a proper address and postage paid...put it in the mail and never saw it again. (mailing address was on the back)

Trashy Typography

2006
Found objects, tape, glue
90 x 60cm

Typographic poster made from trash and kitchen droppings.

Mr. Beijing

2004
Postage stamps, found typography
7 x 5cm

Found this great stamp in a Beijing market and added a few extras...

Vaseline Typography

2008
Vaseline, Vinyl
120 x 150cm

I used vaseline to create transparent letterforms that affected the view of the adjacent architecture...it also made the entire gallery smell like babies...

Education and biography
BFA, Kendall College of Art and Design.
MFA, University of Michigan.
Fulbright Scholar (the Netherlands), 2006
Artist in Residence, NLXL, The Hague, 2006
Artist in Residence, Tsinghua University, Beijing.

My BFA landed me in the advertising industry - which I naively thought I could change from the inside...but it just made me sour.

My sense of adventure landed me in grad school and allowed me the necessary time for developing an articulate voice of cultural nourishment. This need for conversation has allowed me to exhibit my strange Design work in many gallerys and museums from Big Rapids Michigan to Beijing China.

I exhibit my work frequently in Europe, Asia and the United States.
