David Lawter

关于此艺术家

I am a painter with a studio in Peekskill, NY, one hour north of Manhattan. I've created many abstract paintings, but I have also been working on representative works focusing on sections of known paintings as new compositions.

Young Woman with a Water Pitcher

2008
Oil on Canvas Panel
46h x 36w

After Vermeer's painting from 1665. I enjoy the details of paintings that appear in art books. The detail takes on a new and interesting composition as in this example of my rendition of a section of Young Woman with a Water Pitcher.

Self Portrait: Between the Floor and the Ceiling, Living Room One (detail)

2008
Acrylic on Masonite
122h x 122w

This is a rendering of a floor section in a house where my wife and I used to live. It was a large Victorian house with rooms in interesting configuration and sizes. I created color pencil studies for each room with views on both the ceiling and the floors. Above is a section rendered in actual size of a section of the living room floor. The concept was inspired by Edvard Munch's "Self Portrait: Between the Clock and the Bed". Where Munch represented himself horizontally between two objects, I represented my self vertically between floor and ceiling. One's personal environment sometimes reveals their life story.

New Beginning

1994
Mixed Media on Canvas
158h x 122w

Abstract Painting 23

1994
Mixed Media on Canvas
107w x 112h

This abstract work has a natural mood. The natural brown aura is accented with a splash of copper metallic pigment running down the middle.

Abstract Painting 16

1994
Mixed Media on Canvas
102w x 61h

Abstract Painting 21

1994
Mixed Media on Canvas
102h x 56w

Abstract Painting 79

1994
Mixed Media on Canvas
26h x 26w

This small abstract work on stretched canvas has bright colors with accents of fine gold metallic pigment.

Artistic License

2002
Graphite, Color Pencil, Pen on Paper
5h x 9w

Created for the Drawing Center's 25th Anniversary exhibition. Having participated in one of their Selections shows, it was my honor, along with 750 other artists, to be invited to submit a drawing to this special exhibition.

Apples

1990
Pastel on Paper
61h x 122w

This beautiful piece has a realistic basket of apples in the center with flowing drapery in front of a wall and wood room trimmings. The piece is executed at an interesting angle adding excitement to the piece. This beautiful piece, ready for hanging, is framed and covered in glass.

Art News/Art In America (cover)

1988
Woven Magazines
28h x 22w x 2d

This is a cover-to-cover weaving of copies of Art News and Art In America. An art collector once said that one could only understand about 20% of art criticism. In this piece words become worthless, but it is a much better read. This piece was included in The Drawing Center (Wooster St, NYC) exhibit - Selections 43. See open view of this piece in this on-line gallery.

Art News/Art In America (open view)

1988

Van Gogh's Ear

1990
Woven Newsprint and Food Wrappers
15h x 20w

This piece illustrates how media hype can outlive the artist. Here Jean-Michel Basquiat's obituary is woven together with wrappers from mixed fruit and nuts. A story concerning dried fruit and nuts and Basquiat's actions toward an art dealer was mentioned in his obituary. The title - Van Gogh's Ear - speaks for itself.

Mona Washington

1990
Woven Postcards
15h x 10w

The Commerce of Art

1991
Acrylic on Clear Mylar, Woven
122h x 92w

This unique piece is two paintings executed in acrylic on clear mylar. The two paintings were executed on the backside of the mylar so that, when viewing from the front, the piece has a gloss surface. The two paintings were then cut into strips, then woven together to make one painting. The concept of this piece is art as commodity.

Raushenberg/Clemente

1991
Acrylic on Clear Mylar, Woven
92h x 122w
