Player Piano
2007 |
|
1: A full size player piano (Pianola).
2: 3 paper piano rolls, displayed on a plinth, each partly unwound,
showing the title and information.
3: 3 oil paintings of the player piano, each 90 x 120 cm.
The piano rolls are made from German pre-war city maps of Dresden,
Hamburg and Berlin issued by The UK War office. Holes are punctured in the paper according to the street alignment and thus creates a musical representation of the
cities, each score is dated a month before the most severe aerial
bombings.
The player piano is by many considered the grandfather of the
computer, using a similar binary yes/no, 0/1 type of early punch-card
computer language. It is also a strong symbol of the mechanical
revolution combining the human music with the automatic
representation.
WW2 was the first war to incorporate the Hollerith punch card
technology (first generation computers) and the mechanical revolution
gave birth to weapons of mass destruction and the term "Total war". To
me war functions in many ways like a machine you are unfamiliar with being fed
information; it is a multitude of actions and reactions only
controllable to a certain extent. As is the music created from the
maps, there is no way of knowing fully beforehand what the score will
sound like. I am further empathizing that factor trough the paintings
but in a slightly different way; the three paintings are painted by
three different Chinese artists from a photo constructed by me. I gave
close instructions on how the painting should look, but again I do not
have full control of what the end result will be. The China-made
paintings are also a reflection upon the manufacturing side of war. The
bombs of WW2 were mostly assembled by people (women) who had no idea
of where those bombs would end up.
My experience of war consists entirely of reading about it and watching
documentaries and movies on TV. I chose to use the German cities because
I am not concerned here about laying blame or taking sides, it is the
simple fact that the destruction of German cities and the death of
thousands of German civilians in WW2 have not been as thoroughly
documented and reflected upon trough art as the other victims of the war.
