Fences in the Snow

| Attitudes about snow are interesting. I used to live in Juneau, Alaska. It rained or snowed a total of about 144 inches a year. It was pretty...but enough was enough. And after enough...then it was simply too much.
Now I live in Gold Beach, Oregon which is on the coast about 30 miles above California. Here it rains about 80 inches a year. It usually snows in some form on the coast at least once a year...but rarely does it stick.
On January 12, 2007 it stuck! I had to teach in the morning else I would have been out all day photographing this beautiful snow. Cheryl and I were able to drive around a bit. The roads were pretty icy. Above our home are two beautiful homes that overlook the ocean. The owners are friends and we felt comfortable driving up to the ridge to look over the other side at the Rogue River.
The view over the ridge was 'awful'. Not photogenic at all. Just snow. Then I turned around and looked out over Dale and Jo Ann's ranch. Awesome!
Fences In The Snow is handheld. 4 images stitched together. As of this writing I've not printed it in black and white but am looking forward to doing so. You can see snow falling, horses grazing, fence wire shivering, wood soaking up moisture. You cannot hear the ocean crashing. But then we couldn't either. It was quiet...very quiet. You know how it gets in the snow. The snow absorbs all the sound.
Perhaps there will be another day like this next year. I hope so. |
