Didier COU is a french self-taught artist. After a career in science, medias, and finally finance, this meddler has started to pick up stones, clay earth pigments and ochres in the perimeter of his Aix-en-Provence studio to create contemporary art mosaics. He mostly makes 2D pictures and murals, entirely handcut, handcrafted and painted, and glued on a solid wood panel

Still, his interest for rocks and minerals started long ago. PhD in Geology in 1986, Didier is rather an expert in these natural and noble materials ! His works are inspired by his fascination for pharaonic egypt and ancient civilisations, who widely used clay and ochres pigments, as before in prehistoric caves. "I admire the geometric regularity, the keen observation of nature and the mysticism of the artists in those times", explains Didier, "The mode of representing man in his environnement, as a whole under gods, persisted for thousands of years".

This naturalist approach is a guideline in Didier's work. Besides a touch of acrylic paint for gold and bright finishings, his materials are each a small piece of the tremendous earth dynamics. Their genesis and longevity are the memory of time and mock about vanishing lives and civilisations. Finally, the rocks he uses - some 500 million years old and stressed by the earth pressure - have remarquable colors, textures and reflectivities, that only his hiking and geological skills allow him to find and cut.

Note that Didier also creates mural mosaics on demand for gallery, architectural, community and home settings.
