Crossing Paths I

1988
marble & oak
122 x 152 x 61

Spacially, the arms of the cross in each peice represent the axis of the world. The crossing of the vertical axis (symbolizing spirtuality and hope) and the horizontal axis (sybolizing humanity and pain) creates a formidable tension that also refers to the four elements and thier properties. The Paths refer to the Journeys of Life: the eternal searches for Truth, Happiness and Purpose. The paths also refer to communication throughout these Journies: Paths that parallel eachother in determined directions that rarely conviene or connect. The spiritual reference to the cross juxtiposes the human loss of connection.

Beyond Barriers

1990
Oak Beams, plaster, drywall, 2x4s, marble wheel and cable/motor
335 x 274 x 198

A kinetic sculpture in oak, plaster and marble. We must go 'Beyond Barriers' when questions arise which can no longer be addressed within a current frame of reference. The breaking down of barriers has been continuous throughout history; 1990 has become a pivotal year for this concept. Structures (walls, fences, etc.) that bar passage are weakened so that the crossing of paths and free interchange of ideas and movement are encouraged. An unestricted, unbouded space is the objective. 'Beyond Barieres' symbolizes a renaissance; a bonding of before and after, indoor and outdoor, the individual and society, creative activiy and intellectual inquiry, east and west, the terrestrial and the sublime. In this project, I deny the indoor wall's function. It is no longer a means of separation or support. The wall is withheld between two crosses (TAU) or four croses, including side views; it is also transversed by a bridge linking both sides of the wall. A break in the wall initiates the passage of light and the crossing path within which form (Continuity) olls freely from one side to another.

Phidippides

1989
stainless steel
488 x 152 x 244

The durability and strength of stainless steel are characterised by the first marathon runner in history, Phidippes. The masculinity of Animus dominates the femine Anima and envelopes her, creating the Hero between the two of them, Phidippides.

Psyche & Eros

2003
Mahogany
55 x 43 x 13

Psyche's heart is being pierced by Eros' love, the Hero within is a back diver.
