I am a contemporary, Australian Aboriginal artist from the Central Western Desert. Born in Alice Springs in 1961, I now live and work in Sydney. My paintings tell the Dreaming Stories of the world’s oldest living culture.

| 关于此艺术家 |
The most important of the many reasons I am a painter, is that I like to teach people about the Dreamtime and what that means. My own understanding is enhanced by my participation in the arts. I am also a teacher, dancer and musician. It is through our art that one can appreciate the enormous complexities of Aboriginal spirituality and culture. We believe that our existence is one of divine creation and that we were placed on earth to protect other life.
My paintings are a way for other peoples to explore Aboriginal concepts of time and space and to be able to interpret them within their own cultural boundaries. I encourage people to do this, because it is a way for them to go from the known to the unknown without fear of being wrong and to respect our differences and celebrate our similarities. My paintings are a bridge between cultures. They bring people together to share what they each have to offer.

Kinship
2006 90 cm x 60 cm |
|
Kinship is a very important part of Aboriginal culture. It encompasses our extended family and it ensures that we marry correctly. We have two kinship systems, a biological and also a skin group system.
|
Seven Sisters 061
2006 90 cm x 60 cm |
|
The Seven Sisters Dreaming Story, like that of many other ancient cultures, relates to the constellation of Pliades. We call the Seven Sisters Napaljarris and they are the promised wives of Jakamarras.
|
Seven Sisters 048
2004 122 cm x 91.5 cm |
|
This Seven Sisters Dreaming took me two years to complete. During that time the painting changed colours many times. I write the Dreaming Story on the back of each painting where I also sign the work. |
Urban Songlines 053
2005 99 cm x 79.5 cm |
|
Songlines are a very significant feature of Aboriginal culture and art. They are like mind maps of our country and help us to find water, food and shelter. Science has recently proven that our Songlines relate to magnetic fields.
|
Water Dreaming 061
2006 90 cm x 60 cm |
|
The hourglass shape in the centre of this painting is the body paint design of the male Creator. Only Jakamarra’s are permitted to use this symbol.
|
Winparrku
1996 90 cm x 60 cm |
|
This painting depicts our sacred mountain “Winparrku” where we believe the two creator serpents came out of the ground. |
Witchetty Grub Dreaming 061
2006 Acrylic on stretched canvas. 90 cm x 60 cm |
|
Witchetty Grubs are a nutritious bush delicacy. They grow in the roots of the Witchetty bush. As a traditional Aboriginal, I am only permitted to paint the Dreamings/Jukurrpa that I have inherited or have been given permission to paint by the living custodian of that Dreaming: our form of copyright.
I am not allowed to eat my Dreamings.
|
Big Snake Dreaming
2004 210 cm x 210 cm |
|
The Rainbow Snake of Serpent is our Creator. This painting depicts the Creator under water. the lines eminating from the corner represent the first Songlines. |

WALANGARI WANGARDI KARNTAWARRA JAKAMARRA, also known as COLIN MCCORMACK, was born in Alice Springs in 1961.
He is of the Arrernte, Luritja, Walpiri, Yankuntjatjarra, Pintubi and Alyawarre peoples of the Central and Western Desert.
Walangari has held many executive positions and directorships of various Aboriginal Councils. He chaired CAAMA (the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association), the first Aboriginal owned radio station and was a director of the first Aboriginal television station, Imparja. He is committed to improving the lot of his people and helping ensure that the voice of Aboriginal Australia is heard.
He has a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education degrees and an Associate Diploma of Aboriginal Education.
Walangari has designed and conducted his own very successful cross-cultural course at the Institute of Aboriginal Development in Alice Springs. The course was attended by many overseas and local professionals and students.
Like the course, Walangari see his paintings as a form of communication between cultures.
Walangari is multi talented. He is a gifted musician and dancer, with a wonderful stage presence.
It was the legacy of his famous great-grandfather, Albert Namatjira and the inspiration of his grandfather Clifford Possum that encouraged him to paint.
While his paintings tell the traditional stories of his people and feature the iconography of the "Western Desert", Walangari uses a fuller colour spectrum and unique effects to forge a striking path within modern Aboriginal Art.
His paintings are widely acclaimed and he has exhibited extensively both in Australia and overseas.
In 1995 he painted the first prize for the inaugural Indigenous Surfing Competition sponsored by Billabong and Coca Cola.
Walangari's life and paintings have been featured in many publications, including the "International Artist" magazine.
The Australian Museum featured Walangari in the CD ROM that they produced as part of their "Living Colour" exhibition in March 2000.
He was commissioned to paint a work for the Rugby World Cup Paris Exhibition in 2003 and in the same year his work featured in the annual selling exhibition “Art Paris” in the Carrousel du Louvre.
The National Gallery of Australia has acquired one of his early works.
