KEN SCHNEIDERMAN is from Atlanta, GA where at an early age he serendipitously discovered his Dad’s cameras inside a dark cabinet beneath the family television set. Growing up he had an uncanny fascination with old family snapshots, Kodachrome slides, Super 8 films and faded shiny Polaroids. After briefly studying music in college, he earned an enlightening but unfortunately unemployable degree in Anthropology.

HE FIRST STUDIED photography at Georgia State University under the soulful guidance of Constance Thalken. After his first group exhibition in Atlanta, he furthered his schooling under South African photographer, Phil Bekker. Inspired by his globe trotting Uncle Al and Michener’s Iberia, he eventually made his way to Northern Spain to trek and photograph the 500-mile medieval pilgrimage route El Camino de Santiago.

UPON RETURNING HOME he pursued an opportunity to print for the late great portrait photographer Arnold Newman in New York. Shortly thereafter Ken began honing his vision and skills while apprenticing alongside photographers Andrew Eccles, Mary Ellen Mark, Rodney Smith and Albert Watson.

KEN’S PHOTOGRAPHS capture people in a simple, dignified and revealing way. His interests in cinema and anthropology continue to inform and evolve his work. A recent APA Juror’s Select recipient, he is currently working on a series of portraits of New Yorkers who have “Style by Default”.

WHEN NOT pointing his lens toward bipedal primates and their environs, Ken plays acoustic guitar and unwinds in his small urban backyard. Periodically at large in the greater world, he currently makes his home in Manhattan with his wife Mai and their dog Louie, whose been known to consume a photograph or two.
