‘STILL ALIVE’ a body of work exploring beauty in decay.
During her Degree in fine art and painting Susan Khosravi studied painting, sculpture and photography. The love of photography lead to it becoming her main discipline, she went on to complete a postgraduate degree in photography and she has used this method of producing her images ever since.
This new body of work concentrates on her fascination with the use and meaning of flowers. ‘I started working with flowers in the early 1990s, I had a tragedy and a birthday on the same day , that year everyone it seemed bought me flowers to celebrate and the sheer number of bouquets in the corner of my room reminded be of a funeral and therefore the double meaning of our use of flowers’ . The work also includes elements of the collections of inanimate and the sometimes ‘once animate’ things she has found and discovered.
Indeed the images of flowers that Susan produces are always slightly unnerving, she manages to produce an eerie feeling of darkness, decay, along side beauty and decadence, which is how she views our achievements and desires in the western world. She is draw toward the lighter and darker side of most situations it appears which is evident in even the most beautiful of imagery the she produces.
Look closely and you will uncover bugs, beetles decaying fruit and dead flowers amidst the fresh new blooms. We are mindful here of the Vanitas painters of Northern Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Although the paintings executed in the vanitas style are meant as a reminder of the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, encouraging a somber world view.
There are similarities between the Dutch Baroque works of Abraham van Beijeren and his chaotic compositions of decadence and waste and the warnings of vanities of Giovanna Garzoni. However overall there is also abundance of beauty and hope recognizant of the Italian Baroque female painters Laura Bernasconi and Giovanna Garzoni.
Out of the lush black backgrounds; a noticeable signature in all her still life work; it is certain to all, in the presence of Susan’s beautifully executed works that it is indeed the beauty and not the decay that prevails .
