Equilibrio nel Mondo (Balance of the World)
2007/2008 Two x back-to-back (interlocking) life-sized bookcases, 2 x headphone sets and digital sound equipment, vacuum molded bookends conceal 5 x miniature dioramas (scale 1:250) contain low-voltage lighting circuits, electrical motors, optical lenses, glass, mirrors, miniature figures, imagery and artifacts. Bookcases 175 x 84 x 60 cms |
|
A collection transcribed from Italo Calvino’s novel, ‘Invisible Cities’.
These bookcases stand isolated within a dimly lit space with two opposing sides, one side facing East, the other facing West and its shelves filled with false bookends void of colour, titles or pages conceal a collection of miniature light-sculptures. Tiny worlds that address RELIGION, WAR and mankind’s desire for POWER are individually viewed through peep-holes that frame optical lenses whilst viewers listen to selected literary readings and sound effects.
‘Equilibrio nel Mondo’ resonates within a desolate space to trigger feelings and thoughts associated with religious purity and death whilst this petrified looking structure stands isolated and frozen in time similar to war memorials and grave stones. Its banality presents a blank canvas, thereby enabling audiences to form personal associations with the content of each piece and whilst some viewers might identify the collection as a mausoleum of literary works, others might see it as a historical archive, a biblical library or a collection of mythical books.
Whilst the concept of this collection is based upon complex academic research it is more important that individual viewers interpret the collection through personal associations, memories, aspirations and their poetic imaginations. Here, audiences are invited to experience a sense of visual wonder through unknown miniature worlds where humanities disposition for wanting to ‘play god’ might be realised.

Crociate Reliose (Religious Crusade) DETAIL
2007 13 x 13 x 13 cms |
|
Miniature diorama concealed inside bookcases.
The two figures represent MARCO POLO (West) and KUBLAI KHAN (East).
The countries which Polo visited on route across the Silk Road to China are depicted through imagery of predominant sacred buildings and places of worship. Throughout history it appears that various religions have continued to be at the root of many wars and power struggles. The contents of this work are infinitely reflected in every direction through layers of glass and mirrors.

Pace Completa (Ultimate Peace)
2008 Optical lens, multiple mirrors, plastics & acrylics, metal & plastic figures, Leds, MDF case 17 x 17 x 27 cms |
|
'Pace Completa' represents a beautiful world where different civilisations succeed in establishing 'ultimate peace’ through rituals and powerful hierarchies. Ecclesiastical or secular, this metropolis echoes a metaphor for dialogue and complex dynamics through interplay, exchange and perceptual interpretation.
This fantastical place containing figures of adults, adolescents and children is mirrored in every direction and from every direction to create an infinite world.

Pace Completa (DETAIL)
2008 17 x 17 x 27 cms |
|
An optical viewing lens creates spatial deception and causes this miniature world to appear infinitely enormous.
Coloured lighting progressively changes through the COLOUR SPECTRUM thereby causing different atmospheres.

Pace Completa (DETAIL)
2008 17 x 17 x 27 cms |
|
Figures within this work comprise EVERY NATIONALITY which can be identified through CULTURAL DRESS and whilst the integral lighting changes through the spectrum various silhouettes are exposed.
Simultaneously, in the backdrop the universal logo of the UNITED NATIONS changes colour and whilst one moment it is visible, seconds later it disappears.
|
Guerra Nucleare (Nuclear War)
2007 Optical lens, figures and imagery, Mess lights and Leds, MDF case. 15 x 15 x 23 cms |
|
Whilst the back drop features the atomic bomb which changes colour people flee from the Imam Ali Mosque, Iraq. Buildings in the background crumble through fire whilst the ground below melts with the heat. Blood appears to pour from the doors of the mosque. This is a place of terrorism and genocide. |
Potere Superiore (Superior Power)
2007 Imagery, language translations in texts, rotational motor, LEDs, flashing lights, religious symbols, MDF case. 14 x 14 x 26 cms |
|
Depiction of the ‘rising power of China’ is represented through imagery of the Great Wall of China that is merged with Beijing’s cityscape and both slowly rotate in front of a backdrop that identifies the world’s predominant religions including Christianity and Islam. In front, imagery of the Whitehouse, Washington indicates the current political concerns of the USA whilst the severed rope in front represents a tug-of-war between nations, religions and the tug-of-war for power.
Various symbols feature within the backdrop including: - the symbol of Jesus, the Christian Cross, the Islamic star and crescent, the symbol of Allah and the Buddhist Wheel of Dharma. This tiny space represents the ‘world in the now’.

Potere Superiore (Superior Power) DETAIL
2007 14 x 14 x 26 cms |
|
The most predominant religions across the world are Christianity and Islam and these groups are reinforced here through colour.
Internal lights flash intermittently upon the ends of the strained rope and one moment the light is RED and the next moment the light is GREEN so to represent a tug-of-war and the pull from opposing directions.
|
Invasore di Nazioni (Invader of Nations)
2007 Optical lens, gigures and imagery, LEDs and other types of bulbs, MDF case. 13 x 13 x 19 cms |
|
Some historians suggest that Marco Polo visited London, a city that is considered a world leader in finance and the supply of armaments – ammunition that is used to control the world.
London, now a multicultural city that is populated by a wide range of people of different nationalities is also representative of a place where diverse religious beliefs coexist.
The imagery contained within this work includes:- the British War Office, The London Stock Exchange, St. Paul’s Cathedral, No.10 Downing Street, The Houses of Parliament, British War Graves and so forth.
The banner in the background states…’No Blood for Oil – War is Not the Answer’.
