Adham Faramawy

About the Artist

My mode of image making is resolutely representational. Rooted in a fixation on fantasy and the fantastic, I express ideas concerning transmissions of knowledge demonstrating fluid or floating identities. This geographical 'transmission', both religious and aesthetic, marks a shift from the psychedelic to the gothic. Imagining the arabesque ceiling to be an early form of computer generated fractal image, everything folding in on itself in an ever-complexifying geometric ecstasy.

Folk stories and early religious mythology are the basis of visual allegory delineating the burden of aesthetic lineage. The in-between place is the dwelling of the work. The subjects are often depicted in a moment of enlightenment, always seeking to attain or become. An interest in animism, the evil eye, Sufi theology and ritual and Medieval takes on representation, have lead to the adoption of a lexicon of images and a fascination with the averted gaze.

NUT & GEB
This is a video work based on the myth of the Ancient Egyptian gods of sky and earth. The sky and earth are wed but always separated by the air. This piece was exhibited at URA Gallery as a side project to the Istanbul Biennial, 2007.

Education and biography
Since graduating from The Slade School of Fine Art in 2004, I have been involved in an art collective called !WOWOW! We have become known for hosting exhibitions, performances and gigs in large warehouse spaces in south London. I have exhibited, organised and performed in a multitude of warehouse and gallery shows both in London and internationally. These include screening at Tate Modern and Britain, solo exhibitions at URA Gallery, Istanbul and The Black Mariah, Cork, Ireland as well as group shows in Berlin, New York, Bangkok, Edinburgh, London, Cairo, Paris and Hamburg.

Future shows
I am awaiting the release of my first book and the broadcast of a video work on television, details to be released.
