| About the Artist |
Originally trained in research psychology, Adrian Wong began making and exhibiting work in San Francisco while concurrently conducting experiments on young children. He typically incorporates elements of sculpture, installation, video, and performance. Based on a research intensive methodology, his current projects explore issues related to cultural and political developments in the Pearl River Delta as well as the artist's own estranged familial ties to the region. Recent exhibitions include “Reversing Horizons” at Shanghai MOCA, “Dis Play” at Para/Site Art Space, the Hong Kong Sculpture Biennial, and the traveling exhibition, “Where the Lions Are.” |

Bless All Ye Who Enter Here
2007 pine, bamboo, epoxy, latex, incense, tea, Taoist exorcists 1200cm. x 1200cm. x 300cm. |
|
Following the exhibition, "A Fear Is This," I experienced a period of intense misfortune. I was the victim of a home invasion, during which I had all of my material possessions (clothes, computer, hard drives, cameras, telephone, shoes, books) stolen. Shortly thereafter, I was hospitalized with an unknown illness which resulted in internal bleeding. And upon my discharge, when I picked up my few remaining clothes from the laundromat, I found that they were all mysteriously covered in small red circles.
"Bless All Ye Who Enter Here" was designed as a cleansing ritual to remove any residual misfortune that I may have summoned upon myself through my previous body of work.
The installation was modeled after the path of the spirit following death, through the family shrine and finally past the guardians of the gates of hell, the Ngau Tau Ma (Cow-Headed Horses). Two Taoist exorcists performed a rite of exorcism during which malevolent spirits were coaxed from my body. For the duration of the 3-hour ritual, I was seated on a 1-meter diameter platform and wrapped in plastic sheeting. |

Sang Yat Fai Lok (Happy Birthday)
2008 wood, Formica, carpet, foam, felt, balloons, dried fish 500cm. x 500cm. x 400cm. |
|
"Sang Yat Fai Lok" was recreated from newspaper archives, production stills, and family photographs of the Rediffusion (Lai Dik Foo Sing) Television Programs "Calvin's Corner," circa 1960; "Children's Corner," circa 1965; and "Happy Birthday," circa 1975. Despite the fact that the original programs were wildly popular, there are no recordings of them in existence. This was the case for the majority of early broadcasts, which were filmed live and transmitted directly into homes.
Based loosely on the prolific career of the artist’s great-uncle, the shows’ original host, a series of videos was produced from April-August 2008. Due to a number of tragedies and estrangements, nearly all ties had been cut between the host and his paternal family. Through probing both the idiosyncrasies of his ancestors (concubines, gambling addiction, alleged murder, and pet monkeys trained to perform lewd acts) and their mysterious pasts, the video series will be an expedition into a personal history long repressed. With cinematographer, Nicolas Sauret. |
