Alejandro Mendoza

About the Artist

Throughout time and for several years now, during my search for artistic developments, the Cross has become an ever-present vice that rules my creative visions.

To translate my artistic literature into a cross-shape supporting element underlines, above all, my inevitable cultural position; the pleasure resulting from going against; the terrible and vulgar idea of reforming, rebuilding and modernizing images we have from time to time. It is also the idea of a new and novel personal notion I pretend to socialize, motivated by that neo figurative gap our “modern” and “established” will demands nowadays.

To reshape our façade based on the existing surrounding; that is the idea. This also leads us to create mistake and truth: the feeling that we have gone so far that we are not able to realize that sometimes we are already back.

In other words, poetry emerging from these works may be found in the hunt for a lasting critical reflection that endures its own cross; this is the best mean to achieve a proposed goal against the disorder caused by the unstable and kitsch idea that prevails in our current iconography. Both punishment and pleasure present in a development that has turned into one of the most intelligent shapes created by man.

The Cross is sign and symbol at the same time; element and content for an element with one of the highest semantic stress of all times. It is, and has been, a source for miracles; dreams longed for; most beloved reasons for engagement, happiness and merry reties. However, it is also a source of sadness, despair, pain and torture; desolation and the great fear for punishment that ends with the very death. Moreover, I feel the cross is my ideal whim, vernacular and buffoonish the way I see it; a belief over-handled again and again and again, evading its assumed condition with a “jumble and melting” interpretation that resembles a recipe taken from the best book on popular culture.

The Cross provides as many contrasts as my different ways to create over it. To deliberately translate its content would be as to question my freedom of belief or, even worse, the freedom of belief of each person. In simple words, we are all architects of our own peculiar and whimsical altar; we all want our path to be perfect one.

Alejandro Mendoza
