| About the Artist |
I am also a musician, therefore my main inspiration is connected to the way I make music. I use the same working method whether for music or painting. Nowadays, due to the use of computers, the way music is made is very visual, as well as with sequencers and blocks of sounds (Logic sequencer calls it "objects") that are connected in many ways. For me it´s quite impossible to separate music, sounds and visuals. They are always feeding one another in my process of working. As an artist, I mainly do paintings and occasionally some sound instalations.
As for the "Nightfear" series, this is a series of photographs that I've been developing while in Figueira da Foz, in the small pinewoods that encircles my granparent's house. Ever since I was a small boy I visited these woods, and I was always a little afraid of them, especially at night. As it is to be expected, this was an irrational fear that provided many nightmares. I'm finally facing these fears, cell phone in hand, picturing the woods and fears away... Phone cameras are rather amateurish, no doubt, as a medium. However, the reality value of the pictures is very tangible. Actually, it is not unheard of, or it is even common to see the main images of shock news being taken by a regular citizen's phone camera. Thus, we have a kind of picture that is both very real and supernatural. To steal the comment of one of my Stuart visitors, "they almost feel like stills from a new age zombie movie caught by eye-witnesses". I want to make very large prints with these photos and see what will the super-dense grain ("errors", as it were, from a "bad" medium) bloom into. Low photo quality turned into strengthened aesthetical surprises.
