| Alexis Ramos-mejia |
| |
Born in Lima, Peru, 1975.
 |
| |
| About the Artist |
The influence of Salvador Dali's surrealism, El Bosco's imagery, and Vincent Van Gogh's treatment of colour and brushstroke are evident in Alexis' work. He combines the use of graphic design digital applications for compositional work and classical methods of painting for the actual rendering of the piece.
Themes in Alexis' work often spring from current social issues pertaining to social justice, equality and ethics. Alexis uses art to express his opinion: "I am interested in art as a language that can be used for the betterment of humanity," he says, "More than a tool for self-expression, art is an opportunity to communicate with the soul of the viewer - in this way, the artist has a chance to effect change".

The Machine
2007 Acrylics 5' by 5' |
|
We are glorified slaves to The Machine. We are devoted to the perpetuation of it's existence under the promise that the resulting lifestyle will make us happy. |
Around the World
2004 Acrylics 60cm by 45cm |
|
I painted this one when I came to Canada. It was a premonition of the future which I could confidently expect with open arms, like a man observing the horizon, waiting for a loved one. The lights are the source of that certainty, of my peace and inspiration. I dedicated this painting to my brother, who I left behind when he was only six months old. |
The Dreamer
2004 Acrylics 60cm by 45cm |
|
We all have dreams and hopes that we keep protected in the corners of our hearts. These are the places where we are most vulnerable and naked, the moments when we allow ourselves to be human and real. It is here that we have the capacity to appreciate how unique each of us is regardless of the ropes and chains that keep us tied to an unjust world that requires the sacrifice of dreams. |
I Am Alive
2005 Acrylics 60 cm. by 45 cm. |
|
Hollow bodies of headless minds dance in a desert of answers, searching for truth on a night of uncertainty, while the unborn call :
I am alive |
Circus World
2004 Acrylics 30 cm. by 25 cm. |
|
Humanity, in it's arrogance and ignorance, tries to hold and control the world, but this hold is precarious. This is a world of weakened, materialistic faith, consumeristic sensuality and self-centered dreams. This is the world in which we live. This is the world that I mock in this painting; a childish circus world, a fiction we live every day.
|
The Cult of Self
2006 Acrylics 50 cm by 60 cm. |
|
I wonder if it is possible to live in this North American life style with its great houses, cars, mortgages, leases, fancy places of worship and overweight pets in the light of the fact that today 35,000 children died as a result of poverty. What kind of justification can we give for our lack of action?... Is it the system, our debts, maybe our children or a convenient compromise? It is all selfishness... it is all about the cult of self. |
