| Alla Tkachuk |
| |
|
Alla Tkachuk’s series of new paintings, big, bold, political, show her ongoing concern with the hilarious superficiality of some of the world’s most powerful leaders. She does what any good historian wishes to do – undresses dictators, revealing them in a new light of evil stupidity both metaphorically and physically. A large painting of Hitler, shirt hanging out, wearing a jacket and tie, with shining naked legs, seated seductively on the lap of a half-naked Stalin, expresses an edgy sense of the absurd.
Other paintings are a sardonic comment on the zeitgeist. A young, bald, slyly pompous City banker, looks through his glasses directly at the viewer as if he has just made a few illegal millions and got away with it. He is attired in a proper fashionable striped jacket but the rest of him is scales and a jutting fin like a merman. He is well equipped to swim in murky waters.
Alla Tkachuk is not afraid to dare or shock. There is no uncertainty in her work, nothing timid or shy yet there is a delicacy in the way she uses paint to light her work – to make it live in the moment. Her recent work is far more than satire or social commentary. It is beautiful, colourful, painterly with a profound command of anatomy, the strength and frailty of the human body as evidenced in the precise manner in which she paints, hands, ears, breasts, legs and genitalia.
She has a long history in painting portraits, sometimes purely figurative, sometimes abstractions of the face/head. Her work in creating revolving 3D pained heads is the first of its kind in the art world. Her 3D “Giving Birth from Her Head” has an extraordinary universal narrative and brings a contemporary vision to portraiture.
She has had many exhibitions around the world, Germany, Kenya, Korea, England. She is planning an exhibition in the United States for 2010. Her work includes painting, installations, digital art, and her peripatetic charity - MASK- which teaches art to school children in Kenya.
