Andre Barjou

About the Artist

Short version:
expressionist painter ; celtic myth, heroes, erotic , spiritualty , digital pictures.
Long version:
The work of Barjou is matured in silence and in time. At first glance, the mystique, the eroticism, and the obsessions are inspired by the American comic heroes of the 20’s and 40’s, and in particular the divine triad – the Phantom, Mandrake and Tarzan.
Tributes to the draughtsmen of that era are not unknown. On the contrary, Hogarth, Ray Moore, and Phil Davis are the chosen children whose inheritance depicts a portrayal of feature, speed and above all the desire to give pleasure to the ordinary man.
In the same stroke, the artist seeks purity in paint and in the art. He wishes to realize the essence, the light, the mystery in his childhood memories through this bristled filter.
Transcendance is both subtle and widespread. The art evolves as it develops and diversifies. Research adds further themes, which both complete and yet continue the artist’s meditation - the circle of power, the cycles of the icons, the round table and the crucifixion.
The sublimation of these themes remains overt alongside the depiction of the circumstances and the perceptions of the artist and his view of contemporary events.
These thematic preoccupations are coupled quite evidently with diligent research. The keen eye will perceive how all is pretext in image renewal, the need that guides the creation of the table, and the same need that ascends to figurative abstraction.
The art concedes neither to fashion nor to the business art arena. The artist clearly acknowledges the power of this world, in his denial of the same.
Beauty hides in truth/clarity/honesty…
Let the show go on…
