Anna Vanmatre

About the Artist

She has been credited with developing techniques utilizing graphite on three-dimensional paper and creating monumental graphite paintings, many 10 to 20 feet high. From 1979-2003 she created cycles of black and white works entitled CLOUDY LANDSCAPE, TURBULENT TIMES, NO, HABITAT, SPACES and LIMITS. In 1996 she started a new cycle of graphite paintings called HOPE IN BLUE which added color for the first time. From 1998-2003 she developed 7-panel sequential works called Metamorphoses-Water and Metamorphoses-Fire. The titles refer to the presence of cyclical elements and procedures forming a single movement with constant contrasts and changes. At the same time, she began composing small collages in a new cycle called BEYOND THE EARTH CURTAINS and for the previous cycles NO and TURBULENT TIMES. 2003 and 2004 marked the introduction of the installations In Time In Between-Smoke and In Time In Between-Volcano containing large layered forms with intricate and dramatic shadow effects. In 2005-2006 her new cycles LINES ABOVE, ABOVE ALL, ABOVE AROUND and DENSITY ABOVE, featured vibrational objects in graphite on synthetic paper, three-color silkscreen on glass, collages, water ink and graphite images and black and white lithography.

Blue Yellow Red on Grey

2006
Silkscreen collage
50x50

Primary Colors 2006 - A new series of three-dimensional collages revealing a magnified view of the world above the horizon. She utilizizes intricate drawing techniques, silkscreen on glass, collage materials like synthetic paper and foil, color-layering and open glass plates to create works of multiple reflections and transparency.

In Time In Between

2005
Graphite/pastel/synthetic paper
1016x533

Ten-panel installation Smoke – Volcano, pulls the viewer in between its layers. With its subtle shadows, one is reminded that we are, like it or not, continuously enveloped in a vaporous zone located somewhere “in between”—temporally, spatially, and personally.

Four and Red Rain

2005
Graphite/collage
81x81

Lines Above features a striking linear approach, showing the ephemeral quality of subtle shapes to produce modern-day landscapes. The ambient objects suggest the fragile structure of clouds, air and rain. Using lanes crossing at the myriad angles, she constructs delicate yet dynamic lace-type contours in constant movement. The contrast between solid bright backgrounds and complex dimensional images shows the bold force of nature.
