| Annie Lin |
| |
|
1973, Taiwan,
Annie Lin’s work explores her own experience of femininity through a series of abstract acrylic paintings which capture snapshots of her imagination.
Rounded organic bodies pierced by hooks and thorns evoke danger, desire and constraint. A variety of richly textured and patterned materials unravel to reveal delicate membranous surfaces. These surfaces give tactile expression to feelings not only of exposure and vulnerability but also of excitement and arousal.
The palette of bright confectionery colours alludes to a perceived superficial gloss disguising darker themes.
Annie Lin received her initial training in Taiwan where she learned traditional forms of Eastern painting which she has subsequently translated into a contemporary idiom. She is currently Artist-in-Residence at Nottingham University’s Lakeside Arts Centre.

| About the Artist |
My research explores what might constitute a 'phenomenological' experience of a feminine awareness in fine art practice. By the collection of experience, perception and memories from my inner self, I understand and expand the meaning of the 'feminine', where 'boundary' and 'difference' becomes another realm of possibilities and reality for me. I intend to evoke themes of danger, desire, and constraint through imagery connected to female sexuality. |

Am I falling or flying
2006 Acrylic on canvas,resin. 75cmX75cm |
|
This painting was started from the impression of an overflow of desire, like a nearly bloating balloon at the edge of flooding that mixed with danger and pain, but also in the pleasure of sucking unceasing fantasy milk. I am looking for images between spiritual ecstasy and those of sexual pleasure. I intend to bring the anxiety of a dissatisfied desire, a process which is endlessly retuning the self through contradiction, paradox and parody.

A Waltz of the betrayer
2006 Acrylic on canvas,resin 150cmX160cm |
|
I tend to transform my images to a more metaphorical, anxious, aggressive, and restraint image. The composition and meaning, "masculinity" and "femininity”, inner and outer, subjective and objective, are all interwoven. The whole painting is in the process of wrapping and opening; which is similar to a psychological stage of hesitation for desire, full of curiosity and self murmuring. |
Entre nous
2006 Acrylic on canvas,resin 145cmX150cm |
|
In this paining, I come back to the ‘womb’ which is about the relationship and pregnancy. I refer to the anatomy of the womb that includes ovaries and uterine tubes. A long stem of bramble like the umbilical cord linked to maternal body shows the tension between the mother -daughter relationship. The small waves show the vibration of pulling the wire and the wobbling hormone activity. Here the womb plays a beautiful lust in the relationship, but at the same time, the chances of pregnancy become a heavy burden. |
Sleepless games
2006 Acrylic on canvas 50cmX60cm |

Dancing with hesitation
2006 Acrylic on canvas,resin 100cmX100cm |
|
In my painting, I try to identify myself in the boundary between subject and object. It is a critical phenomenon that is non linear, floating, fragmented.
The rainbow colors on the wave represent the fantasy of joy- fascination; at the same time, the stripes show the warning of sex. There are gears under the fabric that implies a half machine half human movement of our body, which create a mechanical and organic, controlled and desperately fragile.
