| About the Artist |
I like to experiment with different materials and textures. In some paintings I have used gesso, collaged paper and scrim to build up the surface of the painting and then using thin layers of paint, have wiped away the surface to let the light marks through. These textures and marks serve to disperse the forms and integrate them into the surrounding space. In other paintings I have used oil paint alone to knit the surface elements together. In all my work I'm trying to create a sense of harmony, unity, wholeness and luminosity. In the city scenes I have been trying to convey the oppressive quality of the urban environment and the sense of people's isolation from one another, the vulnerability of people and their inner lives. I also use the solitary figure as a vehicle for expressing my own feelings and emotions. In contrast to the pace of urban life, I'm trying to convey a sense of peacefulness and stillness within myself. |
