egotera

2003
110 X 100 cm

This painting is my own self portrait as an Indonesian of Chinese descent who still oftentimes is being discriminated against. One of the discriminatory treatments is related to the process of obtaining a certificate of identity of citizenship for ethnic Chinese (SBKRI) which is created systematically as an instrument of extortion resulting in economic profiteering for government officials.

dinner

2004
charcoal on paper
38.5 X 52.5 cm

The tragedy of humanity becomes a daily menu in this life. A child of a fisherman waits for his father who does not come home. Disappeared into the mystery of the blue sea. The darkness of the night symbolizes sadness and suffering. A child is in mourning. Waiting for his father.

shut up!

2006
pencil on paper
38.5 X 52.5 cm

“Little talk, more work,” the saying goes. The soccer game is really not much talk, and a lot of running.

learning a sign

Familiarization with ‘dharma’ since early childhood will become meaningful skills for children in facing negative influences in their future journey in life.

suspect from the womb

2004

152 X 122 cm

suspect from the womb
A scientific study has shown that about 2 million abortions take place in Indonesia each year. this is a startling phenomena. It represents a massive campaign of violence against the unborn. The sentence has been handed down. The womb must be purified of its shame

monument for the hungry feeling

2008
Paper, stainless steel
16 X 13 X 9 cm, 16 pieces

monument for the hungry feeling
Hungry is an undividable part of human living. Moreover in this era hungry always accompanies man’s journey in finding their own paths. Man is hungry for foods and cloths, hungry for justice, hungry for love, hungry for human rights, etc. Names stated on those packs of rice are the victims from such hungry condition.

the heaven walkers

2008
Hard linen, stainless steel
24 X 8 X 12 cm, 99 pieces

the heaven walkers
Spiritual journey brings human living into an unlimitted and everlasting peace.

fetish

2007
acrylic on canvas
145 X 180 cm

fetish
The issue of masculinity has found a new form. This trend can be found in newspapers, magazines or internet sites. For Indonesia this is a new phenomenon. In the mass medias, advertisements offering drugs to increase male sexual power, skills to enlarge penis can easily be found. Masculinity is still an important subject compared to feminity in this country.

Education and biography
I started learning to paint, in oils, from painter Saryono BN, in 1976. Than in 1978 I studied at Raden Saleh Sanggar or Pawiyatan under the guidance of the late Gondo Sukotjo. Both were in Semarang. At first, followed the naturalistic style to learn the basic of painting. In 1979, I began working with abstractionism. Why abstractionism? Once I saw abstract painting at an exhibition. When I compared the title to the form of the painting, I was confused. The more I saw other abstract works, the more confused I got. What was behind those painting ? This curiosity made me try painting in the abstract style. After doing it for such a long time, I feel that abstractionism with its broad point of view can support my expression. However, to look at my current progress, I can’t say whether the work is still included under abstractionism. Now I am mixing either the medium, technique of form. For certain, I want a wider, broader vision.

Future shows
Solo exhibition at National Gallery of Indonesia, 2009.
