| About the Artist |
My sculptures, wall-hangings, and installations investigate the theme of predator and prey, looking specifically to invert the role of the hunted. My work often deals with ideas of abandonment, neglect and violence while also exploring modes of protection such as camouflage or covers. While the content of my work remains consistent, I am constantly reinventing my studio practice, experimenting with various materials and disciplines. I am continually investigating the use of decoration as a means to elevate status and to provide protection.
I shape, stuff and sew incomplete animal forms that embody a sense of decay and neglect, while incorporating an element of opulence through the use of embellishments and Baroque-inspired fabrics. By displaying the fractured or lowly animal as a prize or an object of beauty, I articulate the stresses of the predator/prey relationship while trying to expose the violent underbelly of luxury and power. There is a strong connection between death and luxury and I am examining this relationship through my use of fabrics and fur.
The materials I use are intrinsically infested with issues of hierarchies. I am eager to contradict the associations that are attached to the practice of hand-sewing or otherwise meticulous or soft work. Fibre based work often falls under institutional categories of craft. Through my specific use of fabric, fur and other natural or artificial fibres, I intend to not only decorate as a means to empower, but to also empower the decorative.
In addition to my solo work, I have been developing a collaborative practice with fellow artist, Patrick Cull. Our work investigates the supernatural and its relevance to contemporary life, and it satirizes expectations of Canadian identity through the use of absurd humour. Our most recent projects include the creation of site-specific interventions for Waterloo-Wellington Scenario Thinking at the Elora Mill and the Centre for International Governance Innovation, Waterloo, 2009 and Blue Blood, a group exhibition at the York Quay Centre, Toronto, 2008.
