Bernadette Mcloughlin

About the Artist

Notions of time and space in relation to personal memories, underpins the reasoning behind many of the works I create. As an artist my work is predominantly textile based, often using the tactile and ephemeral nature of the medium itself to further question the viewer’s understanding of the piece.
Professionally much of my career has been spent teaching abroad, and my time spent in Japan has influenced my work greatly. More recently this can be seen reflected in my graphic design projects.

The Blind Pligrim

1996
Tapestries (Nylon & cotton threads, feathers, package lables & acetates)
(34cm x 34cm) x 3

The Blind Pilgrim is about the search for ‘truth’ in a physical world. In asking an impossible question the pilgrim builds his reasoning on what he knows. The tapestries therefore represent the questions of the pilgrim and the shadows, the answers he looks for. The truth of the piece is in fact represented by the ever-changing, unobtainable light, which acts as the catalyst for the two states, which in itself represents the journey or search.
