Originally from Southern California, I moved to the East Coast to pursue my graduate degree in Painting at MICA in Baltimore, Maryland and have been living in the Hudson Valley region of NY since 1990.
Having always been a non-objective abstract painter, in recent years the Hudson landscape and Riverscape have grabbed my attention. For the better part of 3 years I have been working with paint embedded in layers of resin, yet still applying that abstract sensibility to these Hudson Riverscapes. The use of heavily textured surfaces and transparent and solid layering are a continuation of and connection to past styles of work.

ARTIST: CARLA GOLDBERG is a mixed media painter who chooses materials that help focus the attention on the Hudson River and the environment. Her favorite materials include pieces of recycled and reclaimed items, interference and oil paints and resins which have a depth to them as if you were looking through water in her abstracted images of the Hudson. Goldberg recently started showing her work in NYC and was one of the first group of artists chosen for the Beekman Street Banner Project in which 13 foot art banners celebrating the art industry in Beacon, NY will fly over the City for the next two years. Her work can be found in numerous public corporations and private institutions. Her work is frequently publicly juried into the top 30 and top 50 favorites for Projekt30 and Saatchi "Showdown" websites.
ARTISTS STATEMENT:
The play of light seen behind a transparent surface is a theme that runs through all of my work. My imagery centers around the Hudson Riverscape and alludes to their evolution as if they are being seen in the context of archeology. I like to think of this work as mapping the unseen interplay and exploration of elements of topography and various mixed media. My paintings evolve in multiple layers using pieces of recycled materials like found bugs, mis-mixed latex house paint, candy boxes and egg cartons glued into cut canvas with interference and oil paints embedded in layers of resin, crackle mediums and colored wax. Textures, cracks and other patinas are an important facet of my work and give the pieces a sort of history or story for the viewer to create. The boxes are meant to make you feel as if you are digging through time. While these paintings are about the Hudson River, the story is a universal one. Life, communities, industry instinctively begin along a waters edge.
SOUNDINGS: is the newest series of Riverscapes playing with the idea of sonic underwater imaging and benthic mapping of the Hudson River bottom. Most of the titles for these paintings come from the weather and depth measurements log kept by Robert Juet who sailed with Henry Hudson on The Half Moon in 1609 exploring Americas first river. We are about to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the exploration of the Hudson River. My hope is that these works will help get the public thinking about the Hudson as something living and continue to help in it's cleanup. The beauty of the river is not just on the surface. There is a whole world to explore beneath the surface too.

“Man overboard!” comes the cry, trembling hands pointing while others wipe the spray from their
eyes, trying to keep sight of the fallen. She breathes in the winds to gather him to her, a slight grin
upon her selfish lips as she watches shipmates lose sight of her latest lover, her embrace giving
immortality. The corpse will not be found.

Ice Goddess of the Hudson
Careful, young boatman; what seems like sleeping is waiting, still but ready. Overnight she locks all
in stillness. The quiet mocked by her occasional crack or scrape. At last her grasp on the waters
loosens. She throws chunks at the hulls, stabbing what she means to caress.
