Caroline Johnson

About the Artist

Recently concentrating on the urban and the industrial, which are part of my heritage- man made structures and their decay, buildings, factories, funfairs, shipwrecks. Pattern in these- and in landscape and nature... can also paint a mean nude!

Shude Hill, Manchester

2006
30 X 25

Shude Hill, Manchester
A poster for the Casino announces itself on derelict buildings bordering a car park. I liked the jolly Casino billboard and its connotations - contrasting with the utter desolation of the closed premises behind.

Gasworks 1

2007

40 X 57 cm

Gasworks 1
Old gasholders stand stolidly in the sunshine; in the foreground is the modern clutter of street signs and traffic lights. I wanted to show the strange heavy presence of the gasworks - which were, in my town, an important landmark and backdrop to life. This image is one of five chosen for Pizza Express, Salford Quays.

Coaster!

2006

37 X37 cm

Coaster!
The filigree of the rollercoaster is the backdrop for a Wild-West/ Mosque inspired stage set of Amusement Arcades. I've tried to recapture the magical quality I felt here as a child.

Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester

2007
mixwd media on paper
60 X 45 cm

Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester
As seen on the BBC's 'Rolf on Lowry' programme, March 2007. I used the same colour palette that Lowry had used for his 1950's painting.

Blue in Blackpool

2007
charcoal and conté on paper
62 X 48 cm

Blue in Blackpool
A jolly dog's day out at the seaside. The wind-blown, whirling madness of Blackpool- with a borrowed and excited canine....had to be shown.

Central Pier

2006
mixed media on paper
50 X 50 cm

Central Pier
Above the dank dark tarred pier all is bright and gay. The mysterious world of tides and fish and drownings lurks below man's pleasuredrome!

Angouleme Boissons

2007
mixed media on paper
58 X 48

Angouleme Boissons
In Angoulemes dark narrow streets and pock-marked buildings, glimpses of fine architectural detail and a jumble of rooftops are revealed.

Hacienda Apartments, Manchester

2008
Mixed media on paper
59 X42

Victoria Carpet Warehouse

2008
Mixed Media on Paper
58 X40 approx

Victoria Carpet Warehouse
Discount carpets in Preston, Lancashire- in another life the building was probably a pub.

Warehouse

40 X 58 approx

Warehouse
Manchester. Grim railway arches, the old Great Northern Warehouse- and a new bridge advertising apartments for sale. Sold.

Education and biography
Caroline Johnson was born during one of the worst winters on record in Sharoe Green Maternity hospital, Preston. Brought up on a post-war housing estate, archived drawings (aged five) already show a keen eye for detail such as washing on a line and fluff under a bed. By the age of nine she was copying photos of the stars from the Radio Times and had decided to become an artist, feeling that her inherent shyness precluded a career as an air hostess.

Caroline studied at the Harris Art School in Preston, a grand neo-Classical building with sweeping steps leading to Avenham Park and the river. An extra year's Foundation Course was spent at the palm-clad Falmouth School of Art. Thence to London, and a late Sixties 'Withnailesque' existence, leading to a Diploma in Art and Design from the Central College of Art, studying under such illustrious names as Cecil Collins, Colin Cina and Paul Huxley. Caroline now divides her time between Brittany in France and the North West region of England.

Caroline's work leans towards the urban and the architectural, yet she's equally happy with landscape, portrait, still-life and the nude. Of her recent Manchester cityscapes, she says:

"Lowry's downcast crowds on the white pavements had little energy left for the elegance of the urban or the grace and symmetry of the functional. It was up to him, the artist to say, look, here is beauty among the mediocre and the commonplace.
My crayon, my paint seek out the dusty forgotten corners of the city and its fresh shimmering heights and I give them life and restore them to you the passer by- the man returning home from work , the busy shopper and the clubber out for fun.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present the city's passing parade! The charm of a humble nettle growing out of the pavement, creeping shadows, forgotten doorways and broken fences. The watchful solidity of a gasworks and the resplendence of red brick , the mystery of parked cars… the enigmatic shapes of the renewed and the newfangled- and the glittering giants against the steadfast skies."

Foundation courses in Preston and Falmouth.
