My work is inspired by my immediate surroundings- at the time, West Coast California. California offered a radically different source of physical, cultural, visual, emotional and climatic influences. I was driven to engage with my new environment more closely in order to fulfil a personal need to understand my new sense of place. I was drawn to various cultural cues that vastly contrasted with my home country- i.e the lifeguard towers, palm trees, highways. I work from photographic images in order to digitally manipulate the colours and compositions to produce something subjective, something greater than before. The cinematic lighting of the Californian climate helped immensely when choosing a vibrant palette. My work is gestural and unresolved in parts. |
