| About the Artist |
Born outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1982, artist Charles Lutz attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York where he began dealing with the themes of commerce, luxury, and the art world in general. Lutz has done work for noted menswear designer Yoko Devereaux, Surface Magazine, Time Out New York, and the much talked about Terminal 5 show at JFK International. Lutz has also worked for artists Jeff Koons and McDermott & McGough. Lutz has a very unique eye, in that he has been able to view the inter-workings of some of the most prominent artists in Contemporary Art and has used this to his advantage. Lutz's newest and most ambitious series to date consists of 20 paintings on tondo (round) canvases, which critique as well as herald the Contemporary Art market and its inter-workings. Focusing primarily on the Contemporary Art Auction, Lutz looks at the influence of theater, hype and most of all, art world cache and the effect they have on the art world. The works of the series are based on the designs of 19th Century gilded French porcelain, which refers to an aristocracy, a select class of persons who were able to afford these meticulously crafted objects of luxury which were considered status symbols of their time, much like a Contemporary work of art may be today. This series is unlike Lutz’s previous series, Denial and Acceptance (warholdenied.com), in that there is no sense of economy to the work; no detail is to little, no expense spared to create the richness of surface, where the Denial and Acceptance work is very economic in its production. The series references late 19th century American political cartoons to describe the push and pull, and highs and lows of the market. Repeated in the series are the combination of gilded branches and birds that reference 19th Century French porcelain and also reflect the indulgent nature of collecting, the flock-like atmosphere of auctions, as well as the sometime solitary nature and anonymity of art collecting. The series can be viewed at charleslutz.com. Lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
