| About the Artist |
The Art of the Fugue
In this series of sculptural paintings I intended to use various forms to express the interaction of harmony and conflict. To me the relationship between each form is like a voice in a contrapuntal music, it’s a melody by itself and at the same time relates to other voices harmonically. When listening to Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Well-tempered Clavier” I found there were a lot of sculptural elements in it, especially in the fugues, the opening always have a very strong and definite motif, and then other voices will repeat the motif in different tones, just like a shape or form is responding to another. This series is not a reproduction of Bach’s music, but by using the idea and inspiration to develop a unity which shares similar contrapuntal spirit.
The media is painted stainless steel, the color is very limited as the relationship between forms and shapes are more emphasized, this series is a species between painting and sculpture, perhaps more close to relief sculpture as they are hung on the wall and emerge from the wall. |
