| About the Artist |
Chris Antico – artists statement – August 2006
For this exhibition I have specifically selected works that provide a glimpse at the varying themes and their applications that I have been developing over the years in my works. All to which are commonly threaded by my central interests of exploring, an naturally ordered chaos, that tipping point where a work is pulled back from the brink of disaster, much like our everyday life decisions, generally made on the run and which inevitably plan the rest of our day.
Another, concurrent theme is that of lifes discarded flotsam and how it is finally caught out of context such as in a spiders web, with its intrically threaded beauty, which hides its fatalistic bed to those unaware. The spider captures, both prey and detritus. The detritus which one sees washed up on remote sea shores, allows us to embellish a narrative of how and why it has reached us here.
In the work “Conversation”, the spiders web has entangled two heads oblivious in their own interests to the impending danger of death lurking just outside their vision.
As a stepping stone to my most recent works I would like to best explain them in words of Ted Hughes from his poem, “the defenders
“….And nightly underground, we’ll prepare the secret hero,
the little honey bee, whose drum, when it begins, will bring back all the blossom
And sink the iceberg winter in the bottom of the sea…””
So as we struggle with our impending end, nonetheless the naturally world around us oblivious
