About the Artist

Artwork made of human hair.

Where people are, there are emotions. Where emotions are, I find my subjects. My working material is litteral direct taken from the human. Just as the emotions. Material and subject are the base for my work.
The reason I work with human hair, is that hair has symbolic significance: beauty, strength, health, attraction, etc. The moment it is separated from the human all these factors turn around, hair is considered dirty, unsavory and dead.
Human hair is a hyper-individual material, which I felt or spin into yarn.
The objects and installation I create are divided between soft, touchable and an anxious distance. The tension that arises is highly dominated by the impact of the material. The work is figurative and recognizable but shape and proportions are not necessarily correct or ‘beautiful’, what matter is the sensation they evoke. You can always view my work in two ways: kind, pleasant and innocent, or frightening, condemning and guilty.
I work in various media; sculptures and installations (made of human hair), photos and video-work.

Love is the Devil

2003
installation (mixed media)
variable

Work (still in progress, approximately 200 pieces to date), of 666 angels made of human hair with teeth. Love and hate are equal and arise from the same emotion.

Grey man resting

2004
installation (mixed media)
50x50x50 cm.

Crochet head made of human hair, laying on a cushion. Work about ageing. Age and experients can mean peace and wishdom, but also struggle with life weariness, a lack of interest, infirmities and transitoriness.

She only wanted a boy

2004
installation (mixed media)
lenght 30 cm.

Knitted baby made of human hair. About a memory to my mother, who during its pregnancy of my two younger sisters only knitted boys sweaters. She gave birth to girls only. During the pregnancies of my sisters she again knitted piles of boys sweaters. My sisters as well gave birth to daughters only. The life wish of my mother never came true. This issue revers about the ethics questions about the manipulating of DNA. Should we make life ourselfs in an artificial way? There are clinics working with DNA for the ‘making of’ baby’s, where you can choose the sex, color of the hair, eyes and even the intelligence etc. If we are confronted with a life wish so strong, how do we feel about this issue?

Perfect Stranger ♂

2004
Human figure made of human hair.
lenght: 230 cm.

This work has its origin from the notion that I always work with human hair and that every hair carries the genes (DNA) of each individual. My ‘Perfect Stranger’ has arisen from a compilation of uncountable many genes. The title ‘Perfect Stranger’ is dualistic. It revers directly to the question if manipulating with DNA and genes is justified aesthetically, both at medical - and beauty level. More and more people aim for general beauty ideals (witch I call the barbie-syndroom). Do we need the perfect human? Does ‘perfection’ satisfy our needs? Or will the ‘new human’ be so average, we start to revalue the singulatity of the individual, inspite of all additional shortcomings.

Stolen Identity/Wedding couple

2005
Photography
Lifesize photos.

In this time of war, intolerance and terrorism, many are prepared to join an ideological-criminal organization. They are even prepared to die for that purpose. The ideal is their cause and the group their life. Being associated with such organizations one has to give up its identity, by literally putting a hood over the head. The higher cause for which one sacrifices oneself, takes away the possibility to show who you are and what you stand for. The hood or balaclava deprives these people their identity and pride. The balaclava is a signal for society: ‘Watch out!, danger!’. When a terrorist is captured or killed, the media show us who these people are, their uncovered faces. Ordinary men and women, who lived an ordinary life before or besides the cause that took their personal identity and life. We only can’t see ordinary people anymore, only criminals, because we are aware of their deeds. Our prejudice ‘colors’ our opinion. With the series of photographs ‘Stolen Identity’ I will reverse this phenomenon. I portray ordinairy people by taking away their identity through a balaclava. I start this project with photo’s: a family portrait, a wedding picture, a pregnant woman. Precious photo’s one usually frames or sticks in an album. By hiding the faces with the balaclava, I’ll take away these people’s pride. And what will the spectator see looking at these photo’s? How prejudiced is his view?

Avatar - Martine

2006
Photography
80x80 cm.

The series portraits named Avatar show people wearing balaclavas made out of human hair. An estranged image in which the identity of the one becomes veiled with the hair of the other. All models got a preference choice which Avatar to wear. Posing with their 'balaclava type' a surprising inner picture of the models arise.

Burka

2006
Burka knitted from human hair.
lenght 1.80 mtr.

Work about fear, oppression and strength. Fear for the unknown. Litteral: You don't know who or what is hided under the burka. Figurative: Fear for the unknown. In this case Moslem belief. Incomprehension by ignorance. Oppression: Moslem woman are oppressed in many parts of the world. They don't have any rights concerning education, individuality or power. Strenght: Moslem woman who choose aware for wearing the traditional cloth of the Moslem belief (the burka), in countries which don't general accept this.

Lost memories

2000
installation (mixed media)

Installation: chair, scissors, light bulb and human hair. Installation about power and impotence, it all depends on who gave the order to cut of the hair.
