| Claudio Parrini |
| |
|
Born in Vinci (province of Florence, Italy) in 1963, lives and works in Milan, Italy: painter.
 |
| |
| About the Artist |
Claudio Parrini began his art career as a painter in the mid 1980s, when painting was celebrating its own mourning process with transavanguard rites. He then encountered the “subversive" problems of the cyberpunk movement, dealing with issues of communication and social norms, which triggered his current thinking on deconstructing the conventions of the artist’s role and the “places” where art is able to demonstrate its function (and its defining characteristics). In his work, he therefore began to reflect on the internal laws of the art system (and of its methods of legitimization), operating on the “outer edges” of its institutions with collective actions, hypertexts, working with social action groupings such as StranoNetwork, Quinta Parete, XS2WEB. At the same time, however, he remained involved with painting, attempting to deal with the issues using the same technical approach developed in his computer-based and collective work (with the UnDo.Net network). This led him to focus on all of the various “minor” forms of painting (“restaurant” art, votive offerings, bric-a-brac pictures). These are viewed as legitimate and although this ignores issues of aesthetic quality (individual style), it allows them to perform a public function in society. His work developed through experimentation with the possibility of contact and contamination between the two systems: the “private” system of his painting and the collective system of the electronic projects, developing a new language to communicate this complexity. Recently, he has concentrated on painting - landscapes, self-portraits and still lifes - saying goodbye for now to net art.
