David Fulford

About the Artist

My work relates strongly to the experience of being in the landscape - in the north of England and in wild places such as Scotland, Nepal and Iceland. As well as being about places and experiences, my paintings are about the paint itself, so that the material forms an equivalence with the subject matter, creating a dialogue between medium and motif. I work mainly in oils and am an enthusiast of the work of artists as diverse as Lucien Freud, Michael Porter and Ian McKeever.

Avalanche 2

1998
150cm x250cm

Triptych based on the experience of being caught up in avalanches in the Annapurna region of Nepal.

Iceland Glacier 1

2004
100cm x 150cm.

This series deals with contemporary concerns about climate change. It is also a personal response to the experience of being in a landscape which is moving and yet still, powerful and yet vulnerable.

Cuillin Ridge 2

2005
100cm x 130cm.

A response to a powerful landscape, revisiting notions of the Victorian sublime.

Ravenscar Thorn 1

2002
50cm x80cm.

This image evokes the hard elemental cliffs of North Yorkshire, where I lived for many years.

Garth Row Barn

2006
35cm x 40cm

Now abandoned, this barn stands proudly on a Lyth Valley hillock close to where I now live.

Big Shed Looking Out

2004
100cm x 150cm.

One of a series of paintings based on the sheds of my elderly neighbour, a North Yorkshire farmer. Although Eric died in 2003, the project which bears his name continues.

Emptying 2.

2004
80cm x 80cm.

Eric's sheds were numerous and contained a huge and motley assortment of objects. After his death they were gradually emptied.

Red Tin

2003
100cm x 80cm.

Some of the contents of the tool shed. The bizarre mixture of objects combined with the light to spotlight chance relationships.
