“Painting Colorado’s ranching and mining past”
In my art I combine two important personal interests. First, I am intrigued by bold geometric shapes and negative spaces in design. To this end, I use strong colors and sometimes depict my subject matter from unusual angles. Second, as a history buff, I enjoy Colorado’s old mining camps, ranches, town sites, etc. While I certainly paint other subjects, mainly figures, I find that these two come together readily and are probably responsible for my revitalized involvement in painting since I came to Colorado in 1987. I spend a lot of time in South Park, an extensive plain at around 9,500 feet above sea level in the Rockies, which features many aspects of the Old West. Much of my painting is done there and in the surrounding area. In addition, I sometimes find myself injecting offbeat humor into my paintings. I paint mostly in watercolor, including gouache, and in oil.

This abandoned ranch house is located near Jefferson in South Park, Colorado; it was built in1918 by Anthony D Bowsher.

The Diamond Saloon, Como
2006 watercolour 54.6 x 36.8 |
|
Como was an important railroad town in South Park, Colorado, partly because of the nearby coal. The railroads served the mines in the nearby mountains. In its heyday Como had several saloons. The last train left Como in 1938 and it is now an interesting historical town with a population of only thirty-two. The shapes of this decaying wooden building appeal to me. |
Paris Mill
circa 2002 watercolour 71.1 x50.8 |
|
The Paris Mill is a landmark in South Park, above Alma, Colorado. It processed the ore from the mines higher up in the mountains. Sadly, the building continues to deteriorate. The design produced by the timbers interest me most. |
The Gunslingers of Fairplay
circa 2002 watercolour 47.0 x 54.6 |
|
Every summer, the town of Fairplay in South Park celebrates its history by putting on a two day event called Burro Days. Gunfights are staged throughout the day. The shapes produced by these gunslingers make a powerful design. |
At South London Mine
2005 watercolour 48.9 x 34.3 |
|
This mine is located in Mosquito Gulch above Alma, Colorado and has been worked in recent years. My artist friends refer to paintings such as this as junk yard art, but these subjects provide opportunities for good design. The axe is hanging from an ore cart.

Harris landscape
2006 watercolour 38.1 x 55.9 |
|
I really enjoy the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. I was intrigued in the way the two small houses nestled in the typical rocky landscape of the eastern part of the island of Harris.

| Education and biography |
I have limited formal education in art. Instead, I have developed my own stylistic approach while attending numerous classes and workshops over the years, including studying under Buffalo Kaplinski, Frank Francese and Victoria Kwasinski.
I am a signature member of the over 350 member Colorado Watercolor Society and have exhibited regularly in their exhibitions, sometimes receiving an award. I have also had several one person shows in the Denver region and have paintings on exhibit at the National Mining Museum and the South Park City Museum, both in Colorado.
