I was born in 1948 in Valkenburg, The Netherlands. I paint in my home studio, and at the Buffalo (New York) Artists Studio. I paint at every opportunity, which is not always easy as I also have a full-time job which is not art related. |
| About the Artist | |
I clearly remember the day, while painting en plein air a naturalistic landscape that in my gut I felt a bothersome dissatisfaction with my work and an epiphany of sorts occurred and I re-thought what attracted me to the subjects I was painting - it was the major shapes and not the details. Then, after studying a few of my new simplified paintings, an amazing thing occurred. I realized I could command the shapes, create them and then my paintings became not reflections of the world before me but reflections of the world within me, and what had been consuming my thoughts in one fashion or another was the difficulty of making good decisions in a complex world. The results are my landscape paintings. The simplified shapes became a vocabulary by which I construct complex images. |

| Many people seem to think images like this one represent real places. I can't blame them, they do seem to remind people of places. They remind me of places - usually old Europe, in particular the Netherlands where I was born. But they are all imaginary. They all have their foundation in "complexity," but here I am superimposing memories on top of the theory. |
