Donald Karlsson

About the Artist

Thoughts of art and creativity.
Most artists do have some kind of a starting-point in the beginning of a creative process. It can be an art-genre they feel familiar with or a more reproductive kind of work where naturalism is the main goal. The creative process is a journey with many different paths, some of them known to you and some yet unknown. When you choose an new path and suddenly realize that it leads to a place where you have been before, that´s when the work gets interesting and fruitful.
I do not know what makes an artist go on with his or her creative work. It is probably the same things that makes all humans to carry on with their lives despite of all hardship in the world. You could compare it to the faith in god or the idea of a meaning of life. These are eternal questions never to be reveald to us. The creative process is also eternal - the perfect work of art vill never be created. If these secrets would be revealed, life would be pointless.
I know for sure, that in the future when you can create sculptures that float around in space to be watched on your computer-screen, the paper and the pen will still exist. A straw of grass or a flower will still be objects of interest for an artist. Art and literature are really just about approximately ten different questions but it contains so much that the context of it all never will be completely clear to us. The journey within is as real to us as external journeys. My creative process begins with an interesting shape or a ray of light in the external world but then the journey continues within myself. Creativity becomes a rite - a celebration of life and I must go on with it in order to survive. You could call it protest-painting, my way. To learn how to really see and feel the eternity in every aspect of life, I choose as simple motives as possible and maybe I am able to make a print of a soul who wandered on the earth for a small period of time.
