Edwina Chaston

About the Artist

I explore universal relationships, mainly focussing on the positive emotion of love, and mans relationship with his environment.

Love in its varied forms is a primary emotion that crosses cultural boundaries. An emotion that too often gets subsumed in conflict and pressures of life, but I believe that use of our ability to give and receive it is a basic necessity for a complete life.
Through the use of simplified form and the removal of facial features, that may suggest an identity, I aim to depict the essence of these feelings, and provoke an empathy in the viewer.

Emotions are invoked in our relationship with nature, and within the environmentally-themed work I explore mans relationship with both the planet that we inhabit and other animal life, and the damage that we inflict.
There is a co-dependency between ourselves, other life and the planet that we live on. The damage that we do ultimately damages ourselves.
Damage is caused by the cumulative effect of small acts of thoughtlessness, such as the casual discarding of litter; some is caused as a direct result of the pressure on businesses, such as the farming industry, to cut costs and produce cheaper consumer goods. In the case of the farming industry this pressure gives us battery hens, and other space restricting conditions, leading to further problems. Pieces have included work on this theme under the umbrella title ‘The Consignment’.
Other themes have included genetic engineering and our desire to manipulate nature and implement our own desires, perhaps at a yet undiscovered cost.

Jonathon Porritt, talking about the need to make people more aware, in his book ‘Save the Earth’ says
“unless our emotions are stirred and our spirit challenged,
no amount of rational analysis can do the job”.

Art should ‘stir the emotions’ and can play an important job in heightening awareness: That is the aim that I have with my environmental pieces.
