| Efrat Zehavi |

Born in Haifa Israel, 1974
Visual artist based in Rotterdam

| About the Artist |
In her theatre-like installations, Efrat Zehavi depicts the tragic aspect of human existence, albeit not without satire and grotesqueness. Combining sculptures with photographs, décors, video animations and sound, her staged ‘mise-en-scènes’ provoke dialogue within the space of the installations.
Efrat Zehavi’s work is narrative; it is epic, she uses allegorical stories, biblical stories, stories from everyday life and stories from her own life. Her sculptures are painterly; they derive their power inevitably from her hands, but as well, from art history and the painting masters such as Bosch and Bacon. The installations are always composed of many parts; she strives to give meaning to the smallest detail, seeing the whole as the sum of its parts.

The “Pleader’s Prayer” began with a song, was inspired by the allegorical medieval paintings of the ‘Last Judgement’ and developed further as a metaphor for contemporary social and political reality, with an emphasis on the subject of immigration. For Zehavi the subject of immigration is inextricably bound to topics such as violence, xenophobia, loss of identity, cultural alienation and existential anxiety. In the installation these subjects are reflected also in the private domain. It elaborates the universal struggle between the ‘self’ and the ‘other’ and the relationship between ‘man’ and ‘woman’.
¬Politicians in the Netherlands involved in major disputes regarding immigration and integration are portrayed in the animations in the “Pleader’s Prayer”. These animations, along with the entire installation, reflect the frustration and powerlessness of humankind. Towering above them all, not ‘Jesus’, but an advocate, a pleader, a man is singing a prayer defending humanity beyond Good and Evil.
