Born in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada in 1961, Ellen began oil painting at the age of 18 and it has become a full time career since 2001. |
| About the Artist | |
Ellen explores natural and artificial light in her oil paintings of city, rural and cottage scenes. The canoe appeals to the artist as a challenge with its curves. Additionally she explores her driving series, a landscape subject which, while common to anyone who rides in a vehicle, is rarely, if ever, explored as an idea on canvas. Not immediately noticeable is the point of view; that of the viewer from inside of a vehicle. Drama is heightened by detailing wiper blade streaks and rivulets of wind driven rain and water excess pushed aside from the outer windshield in the drivng series paintings. Light and colour are abstracted and broken giving the sense of motion. Most of Ellen's canoe series is painted with realism, detailing each canoe in its particular waterscape. The driving series is approached with an impressionistic attitude evident in her brush work. |

| Ellen Cowie graduated from high school with a Fine Arts Award in 1980 and went on to study Fine Art at Guelph University. The next twenty years Ellen spent living in small communities across Canada while raising her six children. Her lifestyle led to an initimate contact with nature and the isolation allowed her to explore her oil painting. Present JOHN A.
