Ellie Brown, born in 1975, is a native of Boston, MA where she attended Massachusetts College of Art. She received her B.F.A. in photography in 1997 and her M.F.A. in Photography from San Jose State University in 2002. Ellie has received numerous awards including: a Leeway Foundation grant, first prize from the Fraser Gallery's International photo competition in Bethesda, MD, a featured artist from women in photography international, an artist in residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, FL with acclaimed photographer Graciela Iturbide and a full fellowship residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute in 2006. Both her bookwork and photographs are exhibited extensively nationally including two recent solo exhibitions in 2005 at the Morris Graves Museum of Art in Eureka, CA and the Southern Light Gallery in Amarillo, TX. Ellie has been photographing girls’ issues since 1996 and making altered bookwork since 2002. She has taught photography at San Jose State University, National Hispanic University, Ithaca College, Kutztown University, the College of New Jersey, Temple University and Rowan University. She is a visiting professor at the University of Ulsan in S. Korea in 2008. In addition to college teaching, Ellie has been teaching children art since 2000 at a number of schools, museums and art centers. |

The year I turned 30 was a year of deep introspection. I spent many hours contemplating the experiences that shaped me as an adult woman. One of the major factors in the shaping of my personality has been the men I have had as lovers and / or boyfriends. They have taught me many things about myself and about how I relate to others. The Lover’s Books project was started in homage to each of the men I have slept with. Each man has a book and then a digital print of the book in his name. The books are based on my impressions, memories and experiences with each man, regardless of whether the experience was positive or negative. I have contacted the men I’m still in touch with to share my altered book version of our affair. In my e-mail, I explain that the book is an earnest evaluation of my memories and not in any way meant to degrade, attack or humiliate them. Many of my e-mails with the man’s book image have gone ignored. Most of the responses I’ve received have been positive with the men feeling mostly flattered. Only one response to the project has been negative. In this, the man told me he did not care to read the book. |
