Eric Doeringer

About the Artist

My best-known project is the Bootlegs, a series of knock-off copies of work by other contemporary artists that I sell on the street in Chelsea or outside of art fairs. Other projects utilize radically different media, but address issues of legal grey areas and the intersection between the art world and popular culture.

Bootlegs

2006
Variable

The Bootlegs are inexpensive copies of work by today's hottest contemporary artists. They are produced as multiples (unlimited edition) in an assembly line-like process. From top: "Julian Opie", "Damien Hirst", "Richard Prince", "Yoshitomo Nara", "Marilyn Minter", "Elizabeth Peyton", and "On Kawara".

Art Basel VIP Card

2006
Double-Sided Serigraph on Styrene
22 x 25

The Art Basel VIP Cards are replicas of the cards that were given to important collectors, curators, etc. The card can be snapped out of the signed/numbered sheet of plastic. The Art Basel VIP Cards were sold at an art fair in Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach 2006.

Cremaster Fanatic (fan art page)

2006
Web Site
Variable

Cremaster Fanatic (fan art page)
CremasterFanatic.com is a 'fan site' dedicated to artist Matthew Barney. In many ways it functions like a real fan site, but I am not actually a fan of Mr. Barney's work. Instead, I was interested in using Barney as a way to study the phenomena of fandom and celebrity in the art world. The site includes a regularly updated news section; Barney-inspired art, video, fiction, and poetry; every photograph of Barney I have been able to find, synopses of Barney's films, and more.

Video Monochromes

2006
DVD - 90 minute loop
Variable

Video Monochromes
The Video Monochromes sprung from an interest in making art that is practically invisible. They are DVD loops that present a black screen (making it appear as though the monitor is switched off) and a blue screen (so it looks as though the monitor is not receiving a video signal).

Contraband

2004
Mixed Media
Variable

Contraband
The Contraband series is a collection of illicit items sealed in plastic bottles. Each bottle bears a label listing the contents and a warning that, "the possession, sale, use, and/or transportation of this object may be a violation of the law." The articles of contraband include stolen property, recreational drugs, weapons, counterfeit merchandise, and endangered animal products.

Hand Embroidered 'Designer' Shirts

2004
Mixed Media
Variable

Hand Embroidered 'Designer' Shirts
The Hand-Embroidered "Designer" Shirts are inexpensive generic shirts I embroidered with the logo of a well-known sportswear brand. From a distance the shirts are convincing, but looking closely it is obvious that my embroidery skill is a bit cruder than that of a computer-driven embroidery machine. I was interested in the play between the value of the original designer shirt and a garment of arguably lower quality that had been hand embroidered by an artist. I recently received a 'cease and desist' letter from lawyers representing the designer whose trademark I embroidered, hence the black bar covering the logo on the above photograph.
