I Am

This is a portrait of a former neighbor of mine, an old country woman named Frieda, who lived next door to us in the Pennsylvania countryside.
She'd had to leave school at age 12, to work her immigrant father's farm. Surrounding her brokedown cabin were hydrangea bushes exploding in blossoms blue and silky as a summer dusk, rocketing purple delphinia, and perfect miniature cherry trees, poised as dancers, all cultivated by Frieda herself. She could coax rocks into bloom with her small, tough hands.
She took pride in the age she had reached, claiming to be 104 years old, but when she died, we found out she was barely 95. She was a millionaire by that time, her father's acres sold to land developers through the decades, and the usual solicitous relatives hovered around her. But Frieda had no use for them, or even for her millions, which she bequeathed to an obscure church, though she'd said she didn't believe. |

This was a recent portrait commission.
It has an almost Florentine look, I think. It could be called A Young Angel--do angels count years, I wonder? |
