Esmond Bingham

About the Artist

I work across a variety of media both 2D and 3D and on scales ranging from environmental to miniature.
My work is characterised by a strong interest in construction and a delight in the unexpected in common everyday materials.
Although essentially non-representational, my work is concerned with the physical, emotional and psychological language of everyday things.

Dress structures

2004
Various

Dress structures
These are a few of the works I have made while experimenting with Victorian dress patterns.

Huts

ongoing
Paper, card, glass +
sizes vary - approx 10 cms

Huts
Ongoing collection of 'huts' playing with convention and expectation

Gene Pool

2005
50 paper and card structures on five tensioned ropes
detail of gallery installation

Gene Pool
The work alludes to the ethnic diversity of the local population in Monaghan Ireland while structurally it functions like notation on a musical stave.

Hot Breaths 2 & 5

ongoing
Thermal fax paper
approx 10 - 20 cms

Hot Breaths 2 & 5
These forms are folded, inflated and toasted which makes them blush black. Over time they fade through brown and cream. I like the elemental process and the objects' transient authority being somewhere between something and nothing.

Shuffle

2004
Conte on paper and mixed media
H130 x W150 approx

Shuffle

Marine

2006
Conte on paper and mixed media
H51 x W68 cms

Marine
One of a series of paper structures in boxes. Although non-representational, these often allude to the way things behave - in this case the tendancy of sea creatures to hide and take on the attributes of their surroundings.

Bodices

ongoing
Brown wrapping paper
Approx life size (+ or -)

Bodices
Variations on period dress patterns. I am attracted by their incredible structural integrity and their 'attitude'.

Consequences

2005
Wood, paper and string
Gallery installation

Consequences
The installation developed as a response to the construction of the gallery space. Paper structures danced around wooden linear interventions into the architecture
