| About the Artist |
My work stems from a childhood spent in the playful light and color of Seville and Madrid. The passion and emotion associated with the Spanish temperament, while generic, nonetheless figures greatly into my working process.
It is the simple expression of these emotions that compels my painting, which derives as much from studied Classical art as it does from the rich architectural mosaics and artisan crafts which are prominent so prominent in the place I grew up.
I consider my work to be unfolding dramas that incorporate narratives from the everyday life into a hybrid of painting and low-relief sculpture, whereby rich oil pigments are accented with glitter, flora and sand. Usually tinged with an air of humour and levity, my pieces assume a certain primitive decorum that play with the notions of high and low, culture and kitsch, and colour and texture. Flung in the air and tending to land on the brighter, more optimistic side of life, one might even go so far as to call them vibrant and “juicy.”

| Education and biography |
As a child, I was given a picture postcard of a girl whose dress was a piece of material affixed to the card. The 3-dimensional extension of that dress compelled me, and the image of that card inspired me continually as I sought to bring dimensionality to my paintings.
I grew up in Seville and Madrid, places renown for their mosaics. My study of art began with mosaics, and proceeded to drawing and painting. Although I have worked with many media, the sensuality, depth and potential of painting have always captivated me.
At the age of 18, I moved to Washington D.C. and enrolled at the Corcoran Art School where I studied painting in depth. Although I received several invitations to exhibit my work, I declined them; I was not clear about my goal as an artist, and felt that prematurely presenting my work might inhibit me from finding it.
The career of an artist is seldom confined to the arts, and I have had to rely on a number of side-careers to sustain myself. I worked for a while as an artist’s model, during which time I learned about the art of photography. The transformation of figures through photographs had a huge influence on my later work in which figures are often presented as theatre puppets or idealized versions of humans. I later worked on Wall Street in a financial capacity – quite the opposite from the art world! The time I spent in the corporate world helped me to fund my artistic future, but allowed me little outlet for my creativity; when I finally left that job, my creativity was ready to explode.
My life has been a roller coaster of emotions. One thing that is clear is that I have always turned to painting as a means of turning off from the world. Sometimes, I paint on impulse, letting my imagination run wild. At other times I spend days planning every detail of a piece. All my paintings have a story and in some way reflect life.
